MPDC invited its business partners for a sports event on the 9th December, with the purpose of raising food, clothes, toys and school materials for deprived communities in Maputo. The event gathered more than 400 participants which contributed with almost two tons of food only, not mentioning other donated goods.
The “token” of entry for each participant was 5 kilograms of a donation. Now these goods are going to be channeled through Plataforma Makobo, MPDC’s social partner in this initiative, to Sopa Solidária project (a kitchen soup run daily in the streets of Maputo), Centro da Velhice da Lhanguene(a public elderly care center), Associação Luana Semeia Sorrisos (for children with cerebral palsys) and Centro da Reencontro (a community day-care center). According to Ruy dos Santos, founder of Plataforma Makobo, the amount of donated goods “is enough to sustain Sopa Solidária for 3 months, which is amazing!”.
This is the third annual fundraising organized by MPDC involving its business partners (in 2014 MPDC supported the building of CERCI school, a school for children with disabilities and in 2015 it raised funds for the music conservatory and a co-project of music therapy between Musiarte and CERCI), although it is the first sports-focused event, where each individual from the companies has the opportunity to actively participate and donate.
