Grindrod owns and operates Maputo Car Terminal a specialised terminal which began operation in 2007. Current throughput capacity is 52 000 units per annum, the terminal offers an immediate solution to complement the South African car terminals operating under severe capacity constraints. Phase 2 and 3 of the expansion program will take annual throughput to 250 000 units.

In 2009 Höegh Autoliners  entered into an agreement with Grindrod to acquire a 30% stake in the Maputo Car Terminal Ltda in Mozambique. The parties intend co-operating on issues such as cargo operations quality, with the objective of developing the terminal as a major hub port for the region.

The Maputo Car Terminal is ideally located for the import and export of vehicles to or from Gauteng and offers an alternative import/export corridor to the Southern African motor vehicle industry. The Maputo Car Terminal is a registered Transit Clearing and Forwarding.

A secondary market will focus on the second hand import car market to service other African countries and the transshipment of vehicles for the eastern seaboard.
