SUCCESSFUL KICK-OFF

24 June 2003

Port Maputo has announced that the first two months of private management have been successful and encouraging.

"The new staff we recruited are committed and anxious to participate in the port development programme. We have taken on 400 employees in a tight time schedule without any delays and we consider that a milestone," says Alec Don, CEO of Maputo Port Development Programme (MPDC).

MPDC has started a comprehensive training programme to upgrade the working knowledge of all port staff. They are being exposed to up-to-date business principles, modern health and safety practices and enhancement of practical skills.

During the start-up period various operational equipment has been purchased, including multi-purpose stevedoring gear, personal protective clothing for all operational staff, vehicles and communications systems.

"The immediate impact of our initial efforts is a productivity increase of about 40% and we are receiving compliments from our customers, which is very encouraging," comments Alec Don.

MPDC is giving priority to the urgent matter of port-wide security. A new security contractor has been appointed and a tender to construct a 6km security perimeter fence has been awarded. Completion of the fence, including new gates and access control systems, is expected by September.
