MOBILE HARBOUR CRANES ON THE JOB
9 September 2003
Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) is pleased to announce that the new mobile harbour cranes, which arrived a few weeks ago in the Port of Maputo, have gone successfully into operation this week. The multi-purpose cranes, of European make and with capacities varying between 40 and 63 tonnes, are high quality pieces of equipment that perform according to the most modern safety standards.

´With this world class machinery the Port of Maputo can handle at the moment virtually any type of commodity, such as steel, granite and break bulk. Now that cargo volumes are climbing steadily and the demand for Port Maputo growing, the cranes enable us to provide a cost effective high quality service in our 24 hours port ´, Ken Shirley, Operations Director of MPDC, commented.
The Italian manufacturer Reggiane delivered the cranes according to the port’s comprehensive technical specifications and on time. Their highly experienced personnel have completed the commissioning programme, which included an intensive ´hands-on´ training course and operational training remains ongoing.
The cranes are part of MPDC´s 70 million USD investment programme. Since April this year MPDC has spent nearly 10 million USD on a variety of machinery, including powerful harbour tugs, multi-purpose handling equipment and stevedoring gear.
