On June 5, at 10:00 p.m., the first ship loaded with 100,674 tons left the port of Maputo, an historical milestone for the port and a reflection of the capital dredging to -14 meters carried out in 2016/2017. MV Magali, a cape-size vessel with a capacity of up to 104,229 tonnes, transports chrome ore to China.
It should be noted that this milestone comes at a time when the rehabilitation works of quays 6, 7, 8 and 9 have not yet started, and are scheduled to begin later this quarter. After the rehabilitation of these 1058 linear meters of mooring area, which will be deepened to -15 meters, the port of Maputo will receive and regularly load larger vessels.
“At the end of 2016, even before we finished dredging, we were celebrating the operation of Mineral Belgium with 90,000 tons loaded. Today we mark another historic high and, with the rehabilitation works, we are sure that we will achieve much higher tonnages, “said Osório Lucas, CEO of Maputo Port. The rehabilitation of quay 9 is scheduled for completion in February 2019 and the work of quays 6, 7 and 8 is expected to be completed by December 2019.
