Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has signed a contract with P&O Maritime, under which this internationally renowned company will be responsible for the management and operation of the Maritime Services including pilotage, tugging and mooring services. P&O Maritime was selected through a public tender restricted to leading companies in the area of maritime navigation supporting services support.

Notwithstanding the fact that the Maritime Operations are now executed by a third entity, MPDC, as port authority, will continue to be responsible before the conceding authority as well as before the port users. P&O Maritime, within this contract which will enter in force on the 15th November 2012, is obliged to invest about USD $15 million. This contract lasts for 10 years and can be extended for another 10.

By outsourcing to a specialized company, with a large international experience, MPDC is seeking to provide excellent services, thus making the port more competitive and efficient. This outsourcing philosophy applied to some of the port’s activities is mainly aimed at providing an efficient answer to the client’s growing demands, taking into account the exponential growth of the throughput forecasted for the coming years, as a result of the implementation of the Port’s Master plan.

MPDC will also be responsible for setting and collecting fees related to maritime services provided by P&O Maritime, who will by this contract buy new vessels, two tug boats, one pilots boat and one for mooring to substitute the ones that currently exist.

Besides the above referred investments, the new Maritime Service operator will integrate and train all staff that belonged to MPDC at the time of the contract.

With the outsourcing to a prestigious company who operates in over 100 ports, in all five continents, MPDC has the firm conviction that the Port of Maputo will service port users and shipping lines with high safety standards, quality and efficiency, thus decisively contributing for the growth of the Mozambican economy and the Southern Africa Region, as a whole.
